R & C Forum#55: July (Part 1) 2017

Here's your place to post your request and contributions.

Shares are more than welcome.

Guidelines:

1. Do not post anonymous comments. (Use the "Name" option instead of the "Anonymous" one. It doesn't have to be your real life name, a nick will do fine.)
2. Please don't post a laundry list of  over 10 requests at once. Even if you're active in sharing with the forum, that gets to be a bit much.
3. Please don't request or share brand new releases here. There are plenty of horrid sites out there like IsraBox and Plixid that are doing that. Contrary to what the occasional troll may say, we're not here to rip anyone off.
4.  Do not request or share albums that have been posted on the front page of the blog.
Check first the "Blog Archive: Musicians List".
5.  If you have a request for links re-up that you've seen in previous forums, please post your request in the current forum and not at the original one otherwise the chances that people will see your requests are slim.
6. If you can't find what you're looking for, click "Load More" located at the bottom of the comments page. You may need to do this several times, when "Load More" is no longer shown you'll be seeing all the comments.

    6. Phil was a beautiful player who I've followed for many years. It hard to loose all these wonderful souls. That said, how lucky we were to have Phil as long as we did. I'll carry him, Geri and all others we've lost/will loose this year.

    7. A terrible loss, the great Phil Cohran, far more than just 'spiritual', a wonderful musician. I can't add anything unfortunately (except any of his work with Sun Ra - ask if needed), but I am missing Armageddon, and would be evry grateful if you could upload. TIA.

    2. All pointed "new" music was released at mid 70's. I think, Bob Downes don't be angry if somebody post those 40-years old albums. At evening I'll check my archives, maybe all of them I have.

    4. It's hard task to discuss with the man which would like to offend you. But if you really a Bob Downes' friend, you could say about his unwillingness to see his albums here. And yes, we respect all musicians, and don't post his albums here. Without words like s..t and f..ing. Personally me don't post any Downes albums. But what you can do with so trashes like israbox and other? Sorry.

    7. it's all Leonard Feather and Wynton Marsalis' fault that jazz is in such a bad way

      Delete
    8. correct silence does have a very good point, and one that has been made several times in various blogs in the past. I can't say that I'm whiter than white, but I wont download anything that I believe is readily available to buy, though it's impossible to know if a record company has plans to reissue some long OOP recording.
There have been occurrences of unscrupulous publishers releasing works to which they don't have copyright, and paying zilch to the original artists.
I think each one of us should act by our own conciences.

      Delete
    9. correct silence, your indignant and belligerent personal attacks aside, I appreciate you advocacy for the musicians who’s work we all reverie and enjoy. That said, please tell me what arrangements your label had in place to insure royalty payments would be made to the artists or their estates. Media companies, Universal included, are notorious for not making these payments or for making payments so small as to be an insult; fifty nine cents to Burton Greene from CBS/Sony for example. You do make valid points. It’s a pity your vitriol weakens them.

    12. - Puuuh! who would have thought that my innocent little request creates such excitement!

      - I didn't know Bob Downes has a webside and is still alive
      - 30€ for Hells Angels CD is quite expensive
      - As Sergio writes all 3 Bob Downes requests are +/- 40 years old
      - Between professional musicians the subject of (il)legal music distributions is discussed controversial - no black and white, many different aspects.
      - correct silence you have every right of your point of view, others might have different opinions and you should a least tolerate these! with your unpolite agressive arrogant way you disqualify yourself.
      - I think this blog found a good balance between the wish to hear specific music and the comercial interests of musicians by not allowing/posting new stuff. This rule should be followed strictly.
      - Music needs to be played to stay alive and who knows? perhaps Bob Downes wouldn't mind if some blog followers start to discover his older music - because they had a chance to listen to it.
      - Good luck, all the best, and along life to this to this wonderful blog and its followers

    21. correct silence, As a self appointed representative and spokesperson for ‘the truth’, you appear blind to truth that doesn’t fit into the vision you’ve worked up in your mind of us as villains. First off, you don’t know me. You don’t my my experiences. You don’t how I’ve spent my life. There’s also no way for you to know about the tens of thousands I’ve spent on music in my life, not hundreds, not thousands, literally TENS of thousands on albums, CDs, digital files, concerts and purchasing music directly from musicians whenever I can. I didn’t get those El Saturn lps on my shelves or the Braxton prints on my wall from eBay buddy! The prints were limited editions Anthony had printed up of some of his scores that were offered after a concert last year. I feel certain my history is echoed by others here. You’ve also apparently ignored the guidelines of this forum. They’re listed at the top of this page if you care to read them. Number three warrants emphasizing: “Please don't request or share brand new releases here. There are plenty of horrid sites out there like IsraBox and Plixid that are doing that. Contrary to what the occasional troll may say, we're not here to rip anyone off.” I humbly encourage you to direct your venom towards site like those. We are a community who actively support the people who create this music, more so I’ll wager than the companies you work with have in the past. Your arguments are valid but misguided. Your tenor has been abusive, accusatory and insulting to people who are our friends. If I were Bob Downes, I wouldn’t want your kind of advocacy, spreading ill will and discord in my name. We will continue the support the musicians we love by purchasing their music, directly from them when we can. We will continue going to their shows, writing about them, and yes, sharing their music with our friends. We will also continue to appreciate being made aware when music is available directly from musicians and sharing links to those sites. I have no idea who you are or how you will choose to continue. Based on what I’ve read here, I can imagine what that will involve.

    2. Wonderful! Thanks Roberto. I read about this concert in the book "Milestones" by Jack Chambers (if you can find this book it is the best one I have read about Miles -- beware if buying online as sometimes it is broken into two volumes)

    2. I was listening to Doodlin' just the other day. Such a wonderful album! I remember one reviewer prattling on about Archie's 'limited technique.' Yeah, like Ellington, Basie, Sun Ra, etc. I think many of my favorite players suffer from 'ltd.tech.syndrome.' Why do I love them so..... It reminds men of what Robert Wyatt once said about Fela Kuti; "He really only has one arrangement, but it's so good to doesn't matter!"

      Delete
    3. Well, it's a quite common mistake made by those who equate piano technique with digital dexterity. Monk's technique was perfect for what he wanted to do, and many of the things he played are devilishly hard to replicate. Maybe that's why Monk's imitators on piano are not as interesting as the original article.

    4. Thanks, Sergio! I needed all of those. :)

  51. Re: that guy C.S.'s harmful comments re: infringing live musicians' copyrights: Ahm, risking poking again the hornet's nest, here are my (probably unnecessary) 2 cents:
-first, the acknowlegments: IMO I think Vector (-July 4, 2017 at 10:50 AM) has given the most honest of all reactions referring to this issue. I feel the same, and I believe, maybe wrongly, that the rest of us follow suit. Vector is also IMO quite right that rather unscrupulous labels (for example, the Spanish "Fresh (!) Sound" label, and others) sell recordings without ever giving a cent to musicians or their heirs. Finally I believe V. is perfectly right giving a general rule of the thumb: it's up to each one's conscience!!
-2nd acknowlegdement: Our unoffical spokesman, rev.b, has commented (-July 4, 2017 at 12:00 PM, -July 6, 2017 at 2:24 AM, and more) at length the standard attitude towards these issues, as seen in so many blogs --neatly put.

    -now my 2 cents:
    a) let's face it, we ARE all up to a point scavengers and robbers, me too --the only real way to repay a musician's or his/her heirs' labor is just paying them cash! Yet no vitriol is needed for saying this.

    b) BUT given the sloppy state of the recording companies' preservation of musicians' oeuvre (I'm thinking right now of Tim Berne's CBS and Columbia recordings, eliminated by the company after letting him go --"I felt as I had been erased", said Berne), not to mention the official institutions' ignorance and despise, we are actually salvaging the great cultural heritage of jazz and similar music (same applies to the classical music blogs). IMO it's an essential backup procedure, to be taken into account no doubt in the (near) future!

Anyway, Uri, if you consider my comment offending or a bother, or both, just delete it! Peace! :), cheers from hot (38 degrees C) Spain...

  52. My last few cents in this subject (man, this has been draining!):

Why do i keep feeding the trolls?!? Someday I’ll graduate from newbie to novice… It’s hard to stand by while people who have brought so much joy into my life are attacked and insulted. I didn’t even get a chance to see icky’s last reply before it was deleted. Fortune is sometimes kind in that regard. I appreciate it Uri. I’m sure it was an acid-laced insult fest.
Fourcade, seems to me your 2 cents will always welcome, along with anyone’s of good intention. Music sharing’s been debated since people traded cassettes and it’s still not a cut and dried issue. Media company arguments always fell flat with me because the musicians seemed to typically get the short end while all the middlemen damn-well got paid, people like icky silonce too no doubt. I think Uri has come up with the best arrangement I’ve seen. Perhaps it could be modified to encourage the sharing of links to artist’s web pages if they offer music for sale or if they’re on Bandcamp. I like buying direct because it’s the only time I feel the artist is getting a fair deal.
I hope I’m never so arrogant as to consider myself correct, but I imagine my silence will be a relief to all. It will be to me!

    g’night.
